Block Island, RI & More Weekend Shenanigans
Happy Monday! Once again, I spent an awesome weekend out in Connecticut courtesy of my nephew's Baptism. Thanks, Wills! My oldest sister Kristen, her husband Jared, and my niece and nephew Emmie and Wills live up there. We got in on Thursday night in about 4 hours, because despite some traffic I am still Jeff Gordon behind the wheel. But it was still late so I went straight to bed.
Friday morning we got up at 7, got our suits on, and took the Cross Sound Ferry over to Block Island, Rhode Island (first time I've ever been to RI!). We were all a bunch of whiny complainers because the ferry ride was honestly pretty miserable. It was an hour long and super choppy and crowded and people had suitcases and dogs and crying babies. Yikes. But it was definitely worth it once we arrived!
We walked off the ferry and straight to Ballard's, a bar/restaurant/beach front party. We rented lounge chairs and ordered piña coladas instantly from the waitress.
We spent most of the day laying in the sun and swimming. I think I took about 3 naps. The water was freezing but so clear for an east coast beach. The sand was really nice and soft too. Never underestimate the sand people. I got to wear my new baywatch-esque one piece too which was very exciting for me (if you're a dedicated reader you will remember that I was looking for one, and I finally found one in the style I liked for a good price).
We walked into town for lunch at a local brewery, shopped around the little island for a bit, and then packed up to take the ferry back around 4:30pm. Dinner was quick n' easy pizza take out and then I went to bed at 9, hehe. The sun always wipes me out!
Saturday morning started off with an early sister Barre class a local studio, Fitness on the Water. I went to the same studio during my last visit over Memorial Day weekend!
It was the first time Celeste and Rachel tried Barre, as well as for Jared's sister Samantha who joined us. They were feeling the burn!! All of those plié squats and pulses had my quads and my glutes on fiyaa! The instructor Gina was nice enough to let us pose for some sweaty post-workout pictures after class so I could document our sister workout. Just because I'm a personal trainer doesn't mean the enthusiasm for exercise runs in the family.
After some coffee and breakfast and changing into more swim attire, we waited for my parents to arrive from Philly and then we all headed over to Jared's parents house for a day full of pool/boat fun and shenanigans. The view from their pool overlooks a river and trees and is pretty much the perfect spot to lay out and swim all day in between boating.
Around 2 we went out on the speed boat and got to try out wake boarding! I've water ski'd a few times but this was my first time wake boarding. After the first two attempts were failures I realized the boat was going too fast and yanking the rope out of my hand before I had a chance to get up, so Jared slowed down on the take off and I got right up!
For dinner Jared's parents BBQ'd and put out quite a dessert spread, including blackberry trifle, an English dessert. Trifle always reminds me of the Thanksgiving episode of Friends when Rachel attempts to make one and accidentally puts peas and meat in it. "Jam - good, meat - gooooood".
Sunday morning was filled with some lovely DeHaven family chaos, as a house full of us tried to get up, get ourselves and the kids ready, and get to the church for the baptism on time! We require 3 cars to go anywhere when we're all together!
The baptism ceremony was really nice and somehow both William and his cousin Asa didn't seem to mind having water dumped on their heads at all! The mass was followed by a delicious brunch, and then we headed home to Philly. Overall it was a pretty great weekend!
What was the highlight of your weekend?
